Former Buckeye Enjoys 3TC
Posted on May 15, 2011 by Gabbo in News
At some point in the mid-1990′s I became aware of the fact that Buckeye great, Bobby Hoying, was dating a girl from the same hometown as my wife, Jodi.
Spencerville, Ohio is a farming village of maybe a few thousand folks. Further, It turns out that my brother-in-law Darren, was a good friend of her brother, John. Of course, like any red-blooded rocker, I enjoy watching Big 10 Football and am a diehard Buckeye fan…although not quite as visible as some!
So, when I noticed a familiar face (Mr. Hoying) in the Benny’s crowd last Saturday night, I could not help but introduce myself and explain the connection! What a cool dude with a great family!

JD’s Dr. Z Birthday
Posted on March 5, 2011 by Gabbo in News
Both Johnny and JD now use Dr. Z guitar amplifiers. These ‘boutique’ amps are designed and handmade with the finest components…right here in Ohio. Mike Zaite “The Doc” hails from Cleveland and has been tinkering with amps since the 60’s and is now celebrating over 20 years in the business. Of his more notable clients: Joe Walsh and Brad Paisley. If you’ve seen Brad on one of his big tours, you’ve heard Dr. Z amps.
Johnny’s been playing Dr. Z amps for years, and when JD joined the band, he fell in love with their sound as well. So, for his birthday this year, JD received a Dr. Z amp of his own. And like many other Dr. Z players….once you get one of these amps, you’ll want to get another model.
Check them out at the Dr. Z website and tell them Johnny and JD sent you.

Friends, it’s time to head out on the old gig trail again. This year we’re starting our big run with our good buddies at Mulligan’s. This should be an awesome night, one that you won’t want to miss. Did I mention it was also Double Birthday Night? Well, it is the combined birthday party celebration for our own JD and Kevin. We’re going to be playing all your favorites and then some on Saturday, March 5th.
Rubber Rodeo, The Ramones and $3 Coffee
Posted on February 11, 2011 by Gabbo in News
Just the other day I was following up on the SOMA record. It would be a re-issue of tunes done in the 1980′s at a studio called Noise New York. Frank Eaton (owner of the studio and member of the SOMA band) and I had contracted with Locust Records out of Chicago to do the re-issue on CD and vinyl, as well as a digital release.
What made SOMA great and consequently what made Noise New York great were the people strolling through the studio.
The Ramones did some new demos with a young studio engineer named Kevin Fullen around 1985 or so. They were so pleased with the sound we got. We also did initial demo tracks for Lucinda Williams. Taj Mahal came to a session for her.
I remember doing very early rap sessions, too. Afrika Bambaataa came through to tweak some sounds for an artist and went on to do great things. I don’t remember the artist so much, but along those lines we became friends with Ned Sublette who went on to produce some pieces for Afropop Worldwide (heard locally on WCBE 90.5 FM).
We also did some work with the seminal 80′s cowboy-punk band Rubber Rodeo. They were good friends of ours and were featured in Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor comics. Rubber Rodeo introduced us to a brilliant french composer named Mader who went on to compose music for the Ang Lee films ‘Eat Drink, Man Woman’ and ‘Wedding Banquet’. Mader and I played venues like the Mudd Club with Band Apart, a collaboration with his then wife, Jayne Bliss.
Mader is featured on the SOMA record along with so many others, including Carmine Rojas who, for years, was music director for Rod Stewart’s live show and played for David Bowie on the Glass Spider Tour.
I could go on, but I’m gonna need $3 for some coffee.
WHAT?
